Build an itemized total

This worksheet adds a percentage tax to a user-entered taxable amount, then adds fixed fees and other purchase costs. The zero tax and fee defaults do not imply that your purchase is exempt. Replace them with the rate, taxable base, and charges that apply where you register the car. Tax treatment of trade-ins, rebates, fees, and add-ons varies; this is not a state tax engine.

Formula and example

Total = taxable amount + (taxable amount × tax percentage ÷ 100) + fixed fees + other purchase costs. In a purely illustrative scenario, a $20,000 taxable amount, 6% rate, $300 fixed fees, and $200 other costs produce $21,700. The 6% is an example, not a nationwide rate. If some costs are taxable, include them in the taxable amount rather than counting them twice.

When the taxable base differs from the full price

If part of the acquisition price is outside the taxable base, enter that non-taxable portion under other purchase costs so the full price is still included once. For example only, a $20,000 purchase with an assumed $18,000 taxable portion requires the remaining $2,000 in the other-cost line before adding other charges. This does not assert that such an exclusion applies in your state. A tax-base reduction and a trade credit used to pay for the car are different worksheet steps.

What to leave out

This is a cash acquisition total before down payment, trade-in credits, or financing. It does not include future loan interest or ongoing ownership costs. Get an itemized written offer and reconcile every line against the worksheet. Check the registering state’s revenue and motor vehicle agencies for the applicable rules. Use the loan calculator separately for financing.
